Sugar sure is delicious, but it’s not so great for your oral health. Although you’ve probably heard how sugar “rots” your teeth (especially around Halloween!), you may have wondered how it happens. We’ll explain why sugar can be harmful for your teeth and what you can do to curb its effects.

How Does Sugar Affect My Teeth?

While sugar itself isn’t actually bad for your teeth, it’s the acid that bacteria release when they consume sugar on the surface of teeth. This acid is powerful enough to actually wear down the enamel (the protective outer layer) of your teeth, making it easier for them to become stained and develop cavities over time.

Which Foods & Drinks Are Bad for My Teeth?

Processed and refined sugar, found in candy, chips, sodas, and sugary coffee drinks, is especially bad for your teeth. Sticky sweets like dried fruit can also do damage over time. Do your best to avoid hard candies, caramels, sugary gum, and lollipops, which linger in your mouth for a long time.

What Should I Eat & Drink Instead?

Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day! If you’re craving something sweet, opt for fresh fruit like apples and berries, which both support healthy teeth. Apart from the sweet stuff, make sure to incorporate lots of fiber, protein, and vitamin-rich foods like leafy greens, dairy, and crunchy vegetables to keep your teeth and bones strong and to quell the effects of sugar on your teeth.

How Else Can I Protect My Teeth?

It’s okay to have a sugary treat every now and again, but be sure to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, floss at least once a day, and brush your tongue every day to keep your mouth clean and free of plaque. This will prevent bacteria from building up on the surface of your teeth and below the gumline, protecting you from cavities, decay, and gum disease. It’s also important to see your dentist twice a year to make sure that you aren’t at risk for any of these ailments (and if you are, that they are caught in the early stages).
